"I can't believe how mean other kids can be!"
Mia gets a taste of her own medicine. But the incident makes her --Mia-- understand how Lydia must have felt when she made fun of her (Lydia's) designer goods.
Plot[]
The video opens with Mia and her mom, Candice, shopping for school supplies inside Bullseye. Mia drops some school supplies in the cart. Candice shows her this "cute" pencil case she got for her. She confuses her use of the term cute. She asks if she is kidding and tells her she can't be seen with that pencil case and wants a Kipling pencil case instead. Candice reads the price tag, which reads 54 dollars, and tells her it's ten times more expensive, and tells her that the two-pencil case just gets the job done just fine and suggests that she should get this and save some money. Mia doesn't care if they finish the work, and she warns her that bringing that clear pencil box to school is going to be embarrassing.
Candice declines, telling her it's not that horrible. Mia says no, stating that she must have the best of everything. She swishes her hair and selects a lunch box from Vera Bradley's collection. Her mother shows her a much cheaper lunch box, which she despises since she can't fit her food. She threatens her mother with starvation if she does not buy the matching lunch box. Mia finds a bag that matches her lunch box, and her mother recommends less expensive bags. She reluctantly purchases everything her kid requests just to make her happy.
Warren, Mia's father, checks the receipt at home and is startled by how much his wife spent. Candice tells him she tried to persuade their daughter to choose something less expensive. Mia knocks off the food items from the shelves and says there's nothing to eat.
The scene next comes to Mia who is at school. (That is, which takes place on Monday morning.) Mia asks her classmates about their summer vacations at school. Suddenly, there is a new girl at school. Her name is Lydia. The viewers now see Lydia (the new student at Mia's school). Lydia opens her locker as Mia and her fellow students despise her backpack. The girls make fun of her backpack and pencil case, even throwing it on the floor. (Mia throws Lydia's pencil case on the ground and breaks it.) A teacher arrives and overhears her (Mia) and her two friends. And she sees that Mia is making fun of Lydia. She wants Mia to apologize to Lydia. (That is, as she --the teacher-- says to Mia, "MIA CONLEY! WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE DOING?! YOU DO NOT SPEAK TO YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS LIKE THAT! AND I NEED YOU TO APOLOGIZE TO LYDIA THIS INSTANT!".) But she (Mia) objects, refuses to apologize, and instead laughs. (Mia --before laughing at Lydia-- says, "BYE, BROKEY!".) Lydia --from offscreen-- runs off crying (hurt from the incident after Mia made fun of her cheap goods). The teacher (from offscreen) sends Mia to the principal's office. (That is, to which the principal --from offscreen-- calls in and tells Mia's parents about Mia making fun of a new student and her designer goods.)
The next scene cuts to Mia's house. Mia is sitting on the sofa and facing her parents. (That is, which the viewers next see after Mia's parents get a report --from Mia's teacher and principal-- about Mia making fun of a new student and her designer goods. The teacher and principal --although not seen-- reveal that the student's name was Lydia.) Mia's parents --after they hear about the incident from Mia's teacher and principal-- take all of Mia's designer goods (and ground her from it). (That is, after they have a word with Mia about the incident with Lydia at school.)
So now it is Monday. And Mia is grounded from her designer goods and does not have them until next Monday. The teacher, the other teacher, and her students (including Lydia) make fun of her old belongings. (That is, since she --Mia-- does not have her designer goods. She can only use her old bag for a backpack, her Ziploc bag for her pencils and art supplies, and a brown paper bag for her school lunch.) Mia gets a taste of her own medicine. And she finally understands what it feels like to be made fun of for not having nice things. (As a result of this, Mia is hurt. But the incident makes her understand how Lydia must have felt.)
The scene cuts from the classroom to the school parking lot. (And it takes place after school.) When Candice asks how school was, Mia replies it was horrible, and she can't believe how mean other kids can be. She then admits her mother was right. (When Candice asks what she means, Mia replies, "When you said I won't appreciate what I have until it's gone.")
Now the viewers see Mia and Lydia again. Mia apologizes for what she did to Lydia and hands her a new and valuable pencil case. That is, to replace the pencil case that she (Mia) just broke after she bullied her (Lydia) by buying Lydia a new one. (Even though Mia was still grounded from her designer goods for the remainder of the week --and until next Monday-- she makes up for it on Lydia.) She offers a ride to Lydia to drop her off at her house, which Lydia happily accepts. And the episode ends.
