PLOT[]
Hannah has a fear of certain foods because of a disease called ARFID (or "Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder"). Due to having this condition, she's very selective about the types of foods she can eat and has to be careful about the amount or the type of foods she eats. Different foods make her feel uncomfortable and can make her vomit. Despite this, she is a highly intelligent student who was able to skip fourth and fifth grades. The main male character is Tyler. And Tyler, he sits next to a girl in his class. Her name is Kristen.
Tyler finds out that Hannah (and her family) moved to his neighborhood. And now she goes to the same school as Tyler. What is more is that she is in the same period classes as Tyler. (Tyler then knows that every public place he goes to in his neighborhood --including the stores-- he is always going to see her.) Tyler insults Hannah and compares her to his two maternal cousins (both girls/twin sisters) who are both in kindergarten. And he says they not only are the same height and size as Hannah, but also look like her. (That is, as he --Tyler-- says, "But still, my twin cousins, they are in kindergarten! And they are about the same height as Hannah!".) The teacher says that what Tyler is saying about Hannah, it is disrespectful. And she makes him include Hannah in every school activity he is doing with the other students in the class (even if he --Tyler-- has his sister Cindy with him on his collaborations with his friends). (She says to Tyler, "That is enough, Tyler. Regardless of her size, I expect you Tyler to make her feel welcome".)
As stated before, Hannah has ARFID. Her (Hannah's) condition starts where she first vomits when her teacher brings jelly doughnuts (for all her students as a reward for receiving the highest standardized test scores in the county). Her second vomiting incident (from the ARFID) happens at lunch. That is, when Tyler has a slice of meat lover's pizza and curly French fries. (All Hannah has in her lunchbox is Honey Nut Cheerios, Pringles Potato Crisps, and Party Cake Muffins.)
Each time Hannah sees a food she believes is "unsafe" --i.e. jelly donuts...-- she adds it to her journal (which is on her "not safe food" list). (As for Hannah's ARFID status, Tyler knows that if Hannah accidentally touches him or any other student at his school, they are going to most likely catch her condition.)
In the science project, Tyler did study for the project. (Scene takes place on Friday.) But he did not bring it. After Hannah presents her solo project, the teacher says that Tyler is going to have the chance to present his presentation next Monday. That is, and this time he is going to have partners. So Tyler, he is paired with Hannah. (That is, after the teacher says to Tyler, "You know? Next Monday, you are going to have the chance to do the presentation again. And this time, you are going to have partners. Since you are impressed with Hannah, maybe she could teach you a bit more".)
Tyler (after his teacher makes Hannah be his buddy for the partner assignment) tries to protest because Hannah has ARFID. And he does not want to catch the same disease she has (if she touches him). (That is, as he says, "But...!".) He (Tyler) fears that Hannah may touch him and make him catch the condition she has. Because she (Hannah) has touched him in the past and he almost catches her condition. (The reason why he says "BUT...!", it is because he doesn't want to catch Hannah's nasty condition. He doesn't want to be paired with Hannah because her condition is always in the way on him.) But the teacher, she stops him. (That is, as she says, "NO! No buts, Tyler. I think this pairing is going to be very educational for you".) In fact, every time the class works in pairs, the teacher is going to assign Tyler to always be paired with Hannah.
The science project (the next day) has all the students pair up. And Tyler is paired with Hannah. Now Tyler knows that every time there are assignments where everyone in his class are going to work in pairs, he (Tyler) is always going to team with Hannah. (That is, even if her --Hannah-- touching Tyler makes him uncomfortable.) The project starts on Friday and the real presentation is on Monday. Everyone (over the weekend) is to work in pairs. And Tyler (as assigned by the teacher) he is paired with Hannah.
Hannah goes over to Tyler's house over the weekend. The scene takes place (possibly on a Sunday). And she befriends Tyler's younger sister Cindy. Cindy, she has autism. When Tyler comes home from baseball practice (which takes place on Sundays), he finds Hannah talking to Cindy. Tyler didn't allow Cindy to talk to Hannah. (He --Tyler-- thinks that Hannah almost touched Cindy and made Cindy catch her condition.) Cindy lies that Hannah didn't touch her (even though Hannah really did). (Tyler --seeing Hannah with Cindy-- says, "You Hannah must not be bothering me sister!". Hannah --who is lying-- says, "Hannah, she wasn't bothering me!".) Then Tyler says to Hannah, "FOLLOW ME!" (so she --Hannah-- can study with him for the science project). Tyler does no further investigation about Hannah touching Cindy.
Back at Hannah's house, Hannah asked her mom for a ring light and streamed about her condition to inspire other people. Cindy (now dressed up) and ready to interact with other people, showed Tyler a video from Hannah, explaining her condition.
The scene has Tyler and Hannah breaking into the school over midnight. (That is, to practice for their presentation.) Before starting their practice, Tyler goes to Hannah to apologize because of his wrongdoings then explained that he has a fear of public speaking. Hannah then helped Tyler to prepare for the presentation while also helping with her condition. A flashback shows Tyler working with Hannah over his presentation (over the weekend). (That is, all Saturday and Sunday.) The viewers pan to Sunday night. Tyler --though he is trying to avoid Hannah's condition-- first practices his science project at home (with Hannah). That is, presenting it to his mom and sister (Cindy). (Cindy --while Tyler is practicing his presentation with Hannah-- is watching. And she happily promises to intervene on Tyler if Hannah tries to touch him. That is, to keep her brother out of Hannah's condition. But Tyler knows he's always paired with Hannah at school and when playing with friends --outside of school-- he is to include not just his sister Cindy but Hannah too. He is to do that, even if it means Hannah touching him. That is, according to his teacher. When having outings with friends too --and having his sister Cindy joining-- Tyler --to recap-- is to include Hannah in that too.) Hannah made Tyler more confident during speeches and expanded her "safe food" list. (Tyler then finds out that Hannah is not that bad after all. And he gets content, even if she --Hannah-- touches him.)
The scene takes place on Monday. When Tyler goes back to school (for the real presentation), he and Hannah present the project to the whole class. The teacher was surprised and impressed after Tyler declared himself as the one to present orally. At first, he started to become nervous and stopped but Hannah motivated him. He then continued with the presentation. It went well and Hannah and Tyler got applauded.
Although offscreen, the teacher says to Tyler that since he is impressed with Hannah, he (Tyler) should not only always pair with her on assignments/class projects. (On all three trimesters, whenever there is a project, Tyler's partner is always going to be assigned as Hannah.) He must also sit next to her for a desk neighbor. And she puts Tyler's former place to the space next to Hannah (by moving his desk next to Hannah's desk). She moves Kristen next to the former girl Tyler was sitting next to (seen in the first row). Tyler moves to the second row and to the place next to Hannah. (Tyler is no longer going to be sitting next to Kristen. He is now going to sit next to Hannah. That is, and for the rest of the school year.) Now Tyler finds out that not only is he paired with Hannah for every assignment to work in pairs, but Hannah is also going to be his desk neighbor (student next to him). The reason why the teacher wants Tyler to not only pair with Hannah but always have her as his desk neighbor is so that he (Tyler) can see the said new girl more often. Tyler ultimately knows he is going to use Hannah every day when he comes to school. (The teacher --from offscreen-- meets up with Tyler's mom and sister --Cindy-- and tells his mom that Tyler --since he's impressed with Hannah-- is going to include Hannah in everything, both inside and outside of school. That is, including hanging out with his friends and going out on outings with them. And he is to include not just Cindy --his sister-- but also Hannah too. Tyler's mom even gets Hannah's mom's phone number, after getting that information from Tyler's teacher. Then she --Tyler's mom-- lets Tyler know that he --Tyler-- is going to include Hannah every time he --Tyler-- hangs out and goes on outing with his friends. And not just including Cindy. Despite the fact Tyler is to include Hannah in everything, Cindy --tagging along with Tyler-- promises to intervene if Hannah touches him.)
After the presentation, Tyler thanked Hannah and asked her about her birthday party on Friday. (That is, despite the fact that not only both his desk neighbor and team mate --for assignments-- is always going to be Hannah, but he is using Hannah every time he comes to school.) But since no one went, Hannah's mom just cancelled it. Tyler called Kristen and then he and his classmates devised a plan.
Hannah went home after school and watched the television. From the television, her classmates and peers thanked her for inspiring them to overcome their fears. They then appeared behind Hannah and surprised her with a birthday party. They sang the birthday song to her. Hannah's mom served a birthday cake to her but she apologized because didn't like it because of her condition (ARFID) and she says "Hey, at least it's more for everyone else". They laughed and Hannah then put birthday cake in her "Not Safe" list.
