Plot[]
Dad trains 3 sons to be athletes and fighters. 1 of them wants to be a musician. Dad is strict on his sons to be fighters. 1 of them gets sick and dies due to the hard training. Another kills himself. 1 of them stands up to his dad and stops being a fighter.
Marcus Emerson and his older brother Gabriel are playing football with their dad, Alastor. After Marcus scores a touchdown, the father has the youngest sibling, Tristan, join. At dinner, Gabriel is confident he'll bring home the state trophy in wrestling. Marcus' boxing coach thinks he'll win his next fight before the Hawthrone Golden Gloves as well as the tournament. The father then asks Tristan what he has coming up, and he says he's got a gig with a band coming up, to which his dad brushed him off, saying it's just a waste of time. Tristan says it's a paid gig, and Marcus is delighted that Tristan's getting paid. But the dad says that no son of his is going to be a musician, and that he's raising fighters.
He then plays favorites with his sons, and proceeds to call Tristan a disappointment. Alastor says that Tristan can keep playing the guitar until he turns 18, and he'll start training to be a fighter. Marcus and Gabriel enter Tristan's room and tell him to get dressed cause they're going to take him to his gig. There, Marcus meets a girl named Harley. He and Gabriel then resume their daily training. Marcus wins his big fight, and his coach initially decides to give him the next day off but decides against it. Marcus' father tells Tristan that his training starts tomorrow, and is also suprised that Marcus has a girlfriend. Gabriel, however, wasn't feeling well and stormed out of the locker room to the bathroom. There, he coughed up a lot of blood, and Marcus tried to tell him that they needed to go to the hospital. But Gabriel says that he still needs to pack for states, fearing that their father will rage if they told him that Gabriel couldn’t compete after finally getting a shot at being state champion. Marcus suggests at least seeing a doctor, and Gabriel says he'll go after his match. Marcus and Tristan start training together. However, during their training, the mother comes home crying, revealing the tragic news that Gabriel died due to a ruptured intestine.
At Gabriel's funeral, Alastor snatches Tristan's acoustic guitar and slams it on the ground, parts of the guitar broke, much to everyone's shock. Harley is confused on why Marcus doesn't say anything to his dad, but he says it'll only make the situation worse. He wins the Golden Gloves fight and advances to states, but is still heartbroken about his brother's death. Tristan, however, has a disastrous debut. Anyone in the Emerson family tree had never lost their first fight before, until Tristan's performance. Alastor then calls Tristan his least favorite son. He got so emotionally damaged by his father, that he took so many pills and ended up dying. Harley then proposes to Marcus, and he accepts. At Tristan's funeral, the father doesn't seem to care one bit, saying that Tristan died because he was soft and tells Marcus to not be the same person. At states, Marcus gets knocked down, and he struggles to get up, thinking about his brothers in the process. He then punches his opponent so severely, that his face is bleeding. However, Marcus activates rage mode and keeps punching his opponent while he was still down, causing Marcus to get disqualified. Alastor chastises his son about what he was thinking, saying that he could've had it, but messed it up. He spoke to Marcus's opponent's coach, and he agreed to have a rematch. Fed up with Alastor's abuse and belittlement, Marcus declined it and takes the loss, finally standing up to his father. He tells his dad that state champion was always his own dream, not Marcus's, Gabriel's, nor Tristan's. Marcus tells Alastor that he lost his brothers because of him, revealing the reason why Gabriel never went to the hospital was because he knew that if he didn't compete at states, Alastor wouldn't love him anymore. Marcus also reveals what Tristan wrote in his note before he died, it said that he knew that no matter what he did, it would never be good enough for Alastor. Marcus tells him that he's done fighting and decides to live his own life. Harley is proud of Marcus for standing up to his father. Marcus was hesitant at first and still upset that he lost his two brothers and that his father hates him. Harley reminds him that "you can't control the family that you're born into, but you can control the one that you create", much to Marcus' surprise.
10 years later, Marcus plays football with his two sons. However, one son doesn't like sports and wants to draw and play video games instead. This confuses Alastor, who still hasn't changed, and he criticizes Marcus over his son preferring drawing and video games over fighting. Marcus and Harley support the kid's decision allows him to be anything he wants in life as another kid still wants to play football. As the video ends, Alex plays football with his dad again and his family applaud him for his nice catch in football.
