Dharmann Wiki

Plot[]

Lavon and Mason are a criminal duo who commit various crimes together, most of them being of non-violent nature. The episode opens with the duo at a local shopping mall, where Mason distracts the clerk and allows Lavon to shoplift two pairs of expensive shoes.

The security guard gives chase to no avail. Meanwhile, a local track coach and his star athlete witness the chase and the star athlete tries in vain to stop the thief. Disappointed, the star athlete, Aaron, believes that his failure was because he had just finished a training session and needed recovery time.

The duo sells the shoes for a large sum of money in an alley. This allows Lavon to purchase groceries. His grandmother, however, is suspicious, but Lavon insists that he used coupons to purchase the food. Meanwhile, he continues getting notifications on his phone from Mason, despite his grandmother's warnings to not hang out with the delinquent.

The duo proceeds to rob a house, but they trigger the burglar alarm, which initiates a police response. Mason, however, flees the scene, abandoning Lavon, who attempts to flee but is eventually cornered by the police in an alley and arrested. The judge sentences him to 100 hours of community service, but the local track coach, who sits in on the hearing, offers a different deal to the judge.

When Lavon is doing his community service, the track coach approaches him, introducing himself as Andrew Hastings. Having seen Lavon run twice, he is impressed at the young man's running speed, and invites him to join the track team, promising to help him purchase groceries in exchange. Lavon agrees, and his coach is impressed at his performance even after the first track meet. However, he demonstrates an unusual fear of the sight of a firearm; when the coach shows him his starter pistol, Lavon is instantly triggered.

When he returns home, Lavon is confronted by Mason, who has been trying to contact him. Lavon brushes him aside, but then notices an eviction notice on his apartment. Desperate, he finds Mason in the alleyway, who gives him the next assignment, robbing the drug dealer. Lavon instantly refuses, but Mason decides to undertake the task all by himself. The drug dealer, however, pulls out his pistol just in time to fire off a few shots, none of which hit Mason, but one of which hits Lavon, sending him to the hospital.

His grandmother expresses great disappointment in him. Coach Hastings arrives at the hospital after hearing about the incident, wondering what is pushing Lavon to constantly make bad decisions. It turns out, Lavon grew up with a single father who took good care of him, but one night, as they were going out to the movies, they were robbed at gunpoint, with Lavon's father losing his life in the process after refusing to relinquish his money. Lavon was adopted by his grandmother, but they struggled financially. Not long afterwards, he met Mason and started committing crimes together, most of them being related to non-violent theft.

Coach Andrew Hastings informs Lavon that he always has a choice; Hastings himself grew up in a run-down neighborhood. Lavon proceeds to continue training with the track team. Their efforts pay off in a huge way when the team takes home first prize at the track meet (race), to the delight of Lavon, his coach, and his teammates.

Coach Hastings gives Lavon a ride home, but outside, they are confronted by Mason, who angrily demands why Lavon has been refusing to hang out with him. Lavon explains that by now, he has realized that Mason is no friend but rather an accomplice who is ready to ditch him at a moment's notice. Infuriated, Mason pulls out a firearm. This time, however, Lavon does not seem to be triggered. The coach attempts to deescalate things, but a policeman arrives just in time to detain Mason.

Lavon's grandmother opens her door and uses her cane to trip Mason, causing the young man to drop his firearm. He is promptly arrested, and Lavon's grandmother reveals that she is the one who called the police, knowing that Mason was up to no good and was a weed in the neighborhood. Mason is promptly arrested and presumably receives a heavy prison sentence for his acts. Lavon's grandmother rejoices that such a troublesome youngster will no longer be hanging around the neighborhood.

Lavon proceeds to inform his grandmother that Adidas is willing to sponsor him, giving them both enough money to leave the run-down neighborhood and purchase a home elsewhere. His grandmother rejoices, but Lavon credits his coach who told him, "The world does not make you who you are. It is up to you!"
