PLOT[]

In the bathroom, a man named Daniel angrily snatches his wife Hannah’s miscarriage paperwork from the doctor and confirms that she really lost the baby. Enraged, he shouts that she was unable to give him a child and cruelly calls her useless. Hannah, heartbroken and still processing the loss, questions if he truly believes she wanted this miscarriage to happen. However, Daniel—blinded by anger—snaps at her, saying she shouldn’t come crying to him and that she had one job to carry their baby to term but failed. Hannah reminds him through tears that she’s in pain too after losing their child, but Daniel fires back that she doesn’t know what real pain is, claiming that his future was ripped away because his wife is useless. She tearfully argues that she did everything she could to keep the baby, but Daniel accuses her of not wanting it as much as he did. He asks if she even realizes what she’s done to his life and his plans, and accuses her of lying about her health the whole time she was pregnant. She insists that she exercised, drank her green juice, and followed every doctor’s order, but he cuts her off by coldly telling her it wasn’t enough. He rants that he’s 31 years old and was supposed to already have a child and be a father by next year, blaming Hannah for ruining that dream. Scoffing at her faith, he cruelly declares that prayer doesn’t build families while discipline and commitment do. He then reminds her of all the money he had spent on her vitamin supplements, fertility treatments, and various doctor visits. He shouts that he did everything she asked and demands to know what she gave him in return. Overwhelmed, Hannah begs him to stop, but Daniel ignores her pleas, saying he “failed their relationship” because of her. She breaks down in tears as he tells her to spare him her sob story and storms out, leaving her crying alone in the bathroom.

The next day, Daniel was on the phone with a friend, still consumed by bitterness over the miscarriage. He ranted about being done with what he called dead weight, mocking Hannah for being unable to give him children. His tone was cruel and detached as he questioned what kind of wife failed at something so basic. He said he needed a real woman, someone who could carry a pregnancy for nine months and give him a family. With a dismissive laugh, he added that Hannah would probably run off to her mother’s house to cry, calling it good riddance.

Unbeknownst to him, Hannah had walked in and heard every word. Her heart sank as she stood frozen, listening to her husband tear her apart at her lowest moment. When Daniel finally noticed her, she was already fighting back tears. Her voice trembled as she told him he was right about one thing—she would go to her mother’s, because at least her mother saw her as more than a baby-making machine.

Daniel abruptly ended the call and told his friend he would call back later. He turned on Hannah, accusing her of eavesdropping and twisting his words, but Hannah stood her ground despite shaking. She told him she heard everything—how he called her defective, dead weight, and said good riddance. She asked if he even realized what he was saying anymore. Daniel, still defensive, snapped back and demanded to know what she wanted from him. He asked if he was supposed to forget everything that had happened. Hannah’s tears fell as she told him all she had ever wanted was for her husband to stand by her, to comfort her, and to grieve with her. She reminded him that she had lost their baby too, that she was hurting just as deeply, but instead of helping her heal, he had chosen to humiliate her and make her feel worthless. Daniel refused to see it that way. He insisted he wasn’t a villain for expressing his pain and asked how she expected him to feel, questioning if he should be happy about the tragedy. Hannah finally said she couldn’t live like this anymore. She told him that while he might see her as useless, her mother saw her as her daughter, and she would rather be with someone who loved her for who she was than stay in a place where she was only reminded of what she’d lost. Daniel shouted after her as she gathered her things, mocking her for running back to her mother. He reminded her that she was thirty and sarcastically asked if she had men lined up who would want a woman who couldn’t bear children. Hannah didn’t look back. She picked up her suitcase and walked out, leaving behind the man who had chosen cruelty over compassion. As she stepped outside, she thought to herself that maybe crying to her mother wasn’t weakness at all—it was the first step toward peace.

At work, Daniel carried himself with false confidence, as if the collapse of his marriage and the loss that preceded it were just inconveniences he had shrugged off. He leaned against Lucy’s desk, trying to charm her with the same smug ease he used to mask his bitterness. He told her she worked too hard, saying someone as attractive as her should be drinking martinis by the beach instead of wasting away behind a computer. Lucy barely looked up from her screen. With dry sarcasm, she replied that she was there to make a living, not chase compliments from men looking to escape their problems. Daniel brushed off her tone and tried to steer the conversation back to himself. He told her she deserved better—someone who knew how to treat her, someone not weighed down by what he called a failed marriage. Lucy paused and looked at him more closely, asking what he meant. That was when Daniel began to complain about Hannah, saying she couldn’t give him what he needed and that she wasn’t a real wife but a liability. His words were cold and practiced, as though he had repeated them to himself many times before. Lucy’s expression hardened in disgust, unable to believe how easily he dismissed the woman who had just endured so much pain. Daniel noticed her reaction and scoffed, telling her not to act so surprised. Uneasy, Lucy discreetly started recording their conversation at her desk. Daniel continued, insisting that it was all for the best that things ended when they did. He said Hannah had been unable to carry their baby to term and that he needed someone real, not damaged goods. He added that he wanted a woman who could actually give him a family. Lucy, shocked by his cruelty, asked if he was proud of what he had just said. Daniel didn’t hesitate to confirm it. He complained that he was thirty-one years old and should already have one or two children by now. He ranted that Hannah had derailed his entire life plan before it even began and lamented all the money he had wasted on supplements, trainers, and special diets meant to help with the pregnancy. In the end, he said, all he got were excuses. Lucy stared at him in silence, the weight of his words settling in. She couldn’t believe how openly he exposed his arrogance and lack of empathy. The recording kept running quietly at her computer desk, capturing every word of a man too blinded by bitterness to realize the consequences of his behavior. Trying to make him see reason, Lucy pointed out that he didn’t lose a business deal—he and Hannah had lost their unborn baby. Daniel scoffed again, saying it was better it happened now than later. He repeated that Hannah was defective and that he refused to waste his prime years. Lucy’s disgust deepened as his toxicity grew clearer, but Daniel pushed further, saying that someone like Lucy should understand and shouldn’t waste her prime years on a man who couldn’t give her what she wanted. That was the final straw. Lucy firmly shut him down, saying she would never waste her time on a man who mistreats the woman he vowed to love as if she were nothing. Daniel let out an arrogant laugh, mocking her by calling her a woke feminist. Lucy didn’t dignify him with another response and simply asked if he had a job to do. With that, she turned away and left his desk, wanting nothing more to do with him as he went off to flirt with another colleague named Kelly, completely unaware of the storm that was about to follow.

The following day, Daniel was called into his boss’s office. The morning pleasantries he offered went in one ear and out the other, as his boss’s expression was cold and unreadable. Without hesitation, his boss told him to close the door. Confused, Daniel complied and asked what was going on. His boss, visibly irritated, motioned for him to sit down. Daniel’s confusion deepened when his boss said that this meeting was about what he said yesterday to Lucy. Trying to deflect, he insisted that maybe she heard something and took it the wrong way. His boss’s tone sharpened as he informed him that Lucy hadn’t taken anything the wrong way — she had recorded the entire conversation. The recording captured Daniel’s degrading remarks about his wife and the miscarriage, along with his inappropriate flirting at work. He tries to defend himself, claiming the recording was taken out of context. He explained that he was just venting his grief and dismissed the whole thing as harmless “guy talk.” His boss repeated his words, clearly disgusted, and asked if that was truly what he called it — belittling his wife after she lost their unborn child and humiliating her behind her back. Daniel shifted in his chair, trying to regain control of the situation. He insisted that his boss didn’t understand the gravity of what he was going through, reiterating that he had a plan, that he was 31 years old, and that he was simply trying to get his life in order. He added that he had allowed Hannah to be a stay-at-home mom and claimed she hadn’t done enough on her end. That was the last straw for his boss. He leaned forward, his voice stern and steady, declaring that this company could not and will not associate itself with a man who treats women like garbage. He reminded Daniel that there were women in the building who had also suffered miscarriages — and that their partners had supported them instead of tearing them down. He explained that the recording had already been submitted to Human Resources and that, effective immediately, Daniel was suspended from work without pay. Daniel refused to accept the decision, arguing that he was one of the company’s top performers. His boss didn’t flinch. He coldly replied that Daniel was now his top embarrassment and ordered him to clean out his desk immediately. Fuming, Daniel slammed his hand against the desk, but his boss cut him off before he could speak further. He warned Daniel not to call himself a man in his presence — not after everything he had said and done. Seething with anger, Daniel stormed out of the office, slamming the door behind him, leaving a tense silence in his wake.

At a bar, Daniel sat hunched over the counter, drowning his bitterness in glass after glass of alcohol. His words slurred as he complained to nobody in particular about Hannah — about how she had failed him, how she couldn’t give him the family he wanted. From across the room, a man stepped forward, his jaw tight and eyes burning with anger. It was Hannah’s brother. Without warning, he shoved Daniel hard against the bar, his voice shaking with fury as he confronted him. He called Daniel out for mocking Hannah when she was at her lowest, for laughing while she was grieving the loss of their unborn child. He reminded him that she had buried not only her baby but also her dreams — and that Daniel had spat on her grief instead of standing by her side. Daniel, drunk and defiant, sneered back, mocking him for being protective. He asked what Hannah’s brother planned to do about it and taunted him further, asking if he was going to cry for his sister, too. The tension in the air thickened as Hannah’s brother warned him not to say her name again and called him filthy scum. Before the confrontation could escalate further, one of Daniel’s friends arrived, relief washing over his face when he saw him. He explained that he had been worried and offered to drive Daniel home, seeing how intoxicated he was. Daniel waved him off, insisting that he didn’t need anyone’s help — not from Hannah, not from her family, and certainly not from a friend. His words were bitter and slurred, his pride outweighing his sense. Hannah’s brother snapped that what Daniel really needed was a mirror so he could finally see the coward staring back at him. Daniel ignored them both, stumbling out of the bar and heading toward his car. His friend called after him, pleading for him to stop and warning him that he was too drunk to think straight, that he was only acting out of grief and self-loathing. But Daniel didn’t listen. Moments later, the screech of tires cut through the night, followed by the violent sound of metal twisting against metal. Both men rushed outside, hearts pounding, just in time to see the wreckage of Daniel’s car mangled against a streetlight. Without hesitation, they ran toward the crash, while doing everything they could to pull him from the wreckage before rushing him to the hospital.

At the hospital, Hannah is approached by Daniel’s doctor, who explains that while he is stable, the accident was severe. He suffered broken ribs, a fractured leg, and internal injuries. The surgery had complications, and as a result, Daniel will never be able to have children. The doctor offers Hannah the chance to see him, explaining that he is awake but weak. Hannah enters the hospital room, and Daniel is initially happy to see her. She opens her bag and places divorce papers in front of him, telling him she expects them signed by the end of the week. Daniel pleads for a conversation and asks her to forget what he said, but Hannah refuses. She reminds him that he called her useless and mocked her grief, and now he will never get to experience the joy of holding his own child. Her mother watches from behind the door, signaling that Hannah is okay. Daniel continues to deny the severity of his actions, claiming he was drunk and angry and didn’t mean what he said. Hannah firmly counters, saying he meant every word and wanted a perfect wife, a perfect baby, and a perfect life to brag about to his friends. She tells him that it was not her fault but his karma, and he will never have that luxury. She urges him to sign the divorce papers and to never come near her again. Hannah leaves the hospital room as Daniel cries out for her, overwhelmed by pain and regret. Her mother hugs her as they exit the hospital together, leaving Daniel alone to face the consequences of his actions.
