Plot[]
A man named Matthew learns that he is dying from a terminal illness and only has a year left to live. At his job as a barista at a coffee shop, his boss Paul tells him that he also used to feel like his life had no meaning until he became a father, inciting a desire in Matthew to become a father as his dying wish. However, his wife Natasha, refuses to have a child with him as it'd be unfair to bring a child into the world without a father as she packs her bags and leaves. At the coffee shop, Matthew confides in a regular customer named Winnie about Natasha leaving him and how he wanted to be a dad as she mentions how he could always adopt, giving him the info for the center she adopted her child from as Paul fires Matthew due to his personal issues and a desire to keep the shop a happy place for all.
At the adoption center, he is initially denied adoption by the social worker, Gina, when she learns of his terminal illness until he notices a young girl sitting across from him named Tara. Gina informs him that Tara is also suffering from a terminal illness and only has 3 months left to live. Matthew agrees to adopt the girl, feeling he could take care of her better than any hospital ever could as he understands what she is going through. The adoption is set in place and for the next 3 months, Matthew and Tara spend a lot of happy moments together as father and daughter. 3 months later during lunch, Tara excuses herself to go lay down but falls unconscious and passes away at the hospital. Matthew sobs, feeling like this is the third time in 3 months he's had his heart ripped out and that he served no purpose though the doctor reassures him he did serve purpose and was there for Tara when she needed someone the most as a nurse hands Matthew a bag with Tara's belonings.
Back at home, Matthew sits on Tara's bed, holding her teddy bear as he feels a note from Tara underneath the bear's hoodie and begins to read it. Tara shares that when she found out she had a terminal illness, she wasn't scared of dying but rather being alone as other kids had parents to take care of them and she wanted someone to love her. However, nobody would adopt her due to her terminal illness and eventually, she gave up hope until Matthew came along to adopt her. She thanks Matthew for taking her in these past few months and all she ever wanted was someone to love her, that he changed her life. She ends the note by saying that she loves Matthew, calling him dad and her his daughter.
