Plot[]
A rich millionaire, Carlos Baillères, bribes and threatens the school's play director, Mrs. Gomez, into letting his daughter Ava take the lead role in the school's upcoming production though she warns him that doing this to Ava is only going to hurt her future. The next day at school, Ava is happy to see that she landed the role of Lilac but this only earns the ire of her classmates as Ava only got the part because of Carlos's threats to Mrs. Gomez (Which Ava was unaware of as she had been backstage with Melody during this time) despite being a terrible actress and getting the part over Melody who was the better actress. Ava confronts him at home about the threats that he had made. Flashbacks reveal that ever since she was a child, Carlos had been bribing individuals into letting Ava win various competitions despite her lack of talent compared to her peers in order to protect her from failure as he had been trying to follow his wife's words into protecting Ava. Ava says that she has to fail in order to get better and learn from her mistakes, refusing anymore of her dad's money as well as his offers to pay her way into NYU but that she is going to let Melody play the role of Lilac. Over time, Ava begins to exceed in her studies and acting abilities, earning praise from Melody and her classmates the night of the play, finally happy to succeed on things on her own. A representative from NYU shows up to talk to her and Melody about getting in with their acting skills, Carlos admitting to Mrs. Gomez that she was right about him only hurting her future by trying to bribe her way to accomplishments.
