Teenage GIRL OBSESSES OVER Being POPULAR

PLOT[]

Nerdy teenage girl Daria notices popular girl Nadia and her best friends Holly and Cassidy in school. Daria also notices that Nadia has a crush on popular jock Cody the same way she does too. In order to impress Cody, Daria spies on all of the things that Nadia does on her spare time and creates a personal checklist to try to win Cody over. Daria's childhood best friend Steve then notices Daria doing things that she normally doesn't do, like waste good-quality food, undereat in general, avoid anime, watch local and professional sports, dress fancily, frequently use social media, etc. Steve remembers from the earlier part of both his and Daria's childhoods that Daria has always been vehemently against doing all of those things. Daria then says that she is a different person now, and implores Steve to help her finish off her checklist and win Cody over. Steve then reluctantly agrees to help Daria in this task.

Daria eventually starts looking really pretty, attracting everyone else in the school except for a jealous Nadia (and partly Holly and Cassidy as well). Cody then notices Daria and asks her out to the upcoming prom. Nadia, feeling rejected, vows to get revenge on Daria, although Holly and Cassidy are a bit intrigued at how Nadia even plans to do this in the first place. Nadia later approaches Steve and attempts to bond with him over being unhappy at Daria's sudden change in personality and looks in a "lame attempt" to win Cody over. However, Steve refuses to bond with Nadia because of the fact that she is not a nice person, much to Nadia's disgust as she then plans to get revenge on Daria alone.

At the end of the school prom, Cody wins prom king and Daria wins prom queen. Nadia then reveals visual and audial evidence of Daria's true personality in front of the entire audience, and exposes her for putting on a semblance of a "popular girl" and deliberately copying Nadia for several solid days/weeks in an attempt to win Cody over. In embarrassment, Daria flees the stage but Cody pursues her. Daria then apologizes to Cody for what she did, but Cody says that he doesn't care anyway and that he likes Daria for who she is. Cody also says that Nadia is just an arrogant bully, which is why he is not interested in her anymore. Cody then invites Daria to his house, which Daria initially agrees to, but then Daria finally sees a handwritten letter from Steve professing his love for her.

Daria once again apologizes to Cody and tells her that she doesn't think that she and Cody should be an item anymore, because neither of them have common interests and dislikes as it is. Cody then acquiesces to this. Daria then approaches Steve and apologizes for what she did to him earlier too. Daria then tells Steve that he was right all along about how Daria never needed to make herself "look popular" and "do popular people things" just to become a better person. Daria finally realizes that true beauty comes from within, as she and Steve happily become an item and celebrate together.
